FAQ

Questions worth asking before you connect a terminal

Grouped by topic — jump to whichever's relevant, or read straight through.

General

What exactly is Vyre?+

A remote multi-terminal app. Your terminals run on a computer you own: your Windows PC with the Vyre app, or a Linux or Windows server with the headless host. Every tab is mirrored, end-to-end encrypted, to the web and to Android, for as long as it stays open.

What shells and platforms are supported?+

On a Windows PC, the Vyre app runs cmd, Windows PowerShell, pwsh and any installed WSL distro through real ConPTY. On a Linux server, the headless host offers the shells installed there (bash, zsh, fish, pwsh and the rest of /etc/shells) on x64 or arm64. It also runs as a Windows service. You view and type from any modern browser or the Android app.

What happens to a tab if the process crashes?+

The tab stays open showing the last output and the exit code, instead of disappearing — so you can see exactly what happened right before it died, whether it’s a build or a game server.

Can I run an AI agent or a long job with Vyre?+

Yes. Open a tab with a startup command, such as claude or a build script, on your PC or on a server running the headless host. It keeps running when you close the viewer, and you can check on it or take over from any browser or your phone.

Can I save a session’s output?+

Yes. Export a tab as plain text (.txt), as HTML with its colours, or as an asciinema recording (.cast) you can replay. Export is on the web and in the desktop app.

Is Vyre accessible?+

The web app and the desktop app have a screen-reader mode, high-contrast dark and light themes, reduced motion, and full keyboard use, and every control has a name. Contrast and motion follow your system settings by default.

Security

Can Vyre see or read my terminal output?+

No. Every tab is encrypted on your device before it leaves — Vyre.Api relays and stores ciphertext only, and there is no admin override or break-glass path. This is a hard product principle, not just a setting.

What happens if I lose my only device?+

An encrypted backup of each tab’s key is escrowed with KaxlinCore. After a fresh sign-in with multi-factor authentication, you can recover access to your scrollback — this is account-recoverable, not zero-knowledge, and we’re upfront about that trade-off.

Do I need a static IP, port forwarding, or a VPN?+

No. Vyre.Host makes an outbound connection to Vyre.Api — there’s nothing to open on your router or firewall, and nothing to configure on the network side.

Does a server need open ports?+

No. The headless host only makes outbound HTTPS connections and nothing on it listens for connections, so there is no port to open and no SSH to expose.

Which user do a server’s tabs run as?+

The account you choose at install time. On Linux that is the user who ran sudo, or the one you pass with --user, and it refuses to run as root unless you add --allow-root. On Windows, tabs run as your account, never as SYSTEM.

Billing

Is there a free tier, or just a trial?+

Free is a real permanent tier — 1 device and 3 concurrent tabs, enough for genuine daily personal use, not a time-limited demo.

Can I change plans at any time?+

Yes — upgrade or downgrade whenever you like from Settings → Billing, effective immediately.

Technical

Does closing my laptop kill the session?+

No — the session lives on whichever device is hosting it (your desktop, via Vyre.Host). Closing a viewer (a browser tab or the Android app) just stops watching; the terminal itself keeps running.

How many people can watch the same tab?+

Depends on your tier — Free is single-viewer, Plus allows 3, and Pro is unlimited. Every viewer decrypts independently on their own device.

Your next terminal is one tab away.

Install Vyre on your PC or a server, open a tab, and it’s already on the web. Free tier, no card needed.
